Don't despair, says designer Camilla Molders."A beautiful bathroom is about smart storage, well-positioned lighting and attention to detail," she says."It doesn't have to be a lifeless, hopeless space."

The first problem to solve is functional lighting."Luckily, LED technology can easily fake natural light," Molders said."Use it in clever ways, like adding grooves to ceilings and cabinets." Or opt for downlights, suggests designer Sarah Elshaug.
"One or two below the central spine in the room is sufficient, but choose LEDs on the cooler side of the spectrum, rather than warmer bulbs that emit an orange glow." Place LED lights on either side of a vanity mirror to provide effective Task lighting and stylish punctuation.
"Or add a lavish pendant to the side that doesn't take up space, and add LEDs overhead for makeup," she says.Choose ceramic or glass pendants that are moisture-resistant and easy to clean.
Maximize layout for easy flow and movement.Put the shower behind a simple glass screen and add an alcove inside instead of a shelf."It looks stylish, takes up zero space, and is functional," says Elshaug.
"Make sure it's set at elbow height and high enough to hold an oversized bottle of shampoo."
Avoid baskets or floor storage, and use wall-mounted toilets or toilets with hidden tanks to create extra space.
"My focal point in smaller bathrooms is always the vanity," Elshaug admits."It should be stylish and provide a clever storage solution."
Opt for slim, modern profiles with deep-bottomed drawers.Above, add a mirrored cabinet, which is hidden and built into the wall.
"Decorate your vanity with simple faucet hardware and materials that blend together effortlessly," she adds."A cohesive façade makes the space immediately appear larger."
While an all-white color scheme is a traditional choice for small rooms, Elshaug recommends adding lighter shades to your palette."White is a great base, but add neutral tones like muted greys for an airy feel."
Simplify your layout with full-scale tiles of a similar size that extend from the floor up to the walls.
"Use signature tiles in the vanity and shower to add a pop of color," she advises."Small details tend to have the biggest impact."
Mirrored cabinets add a sleek, polished finish to a small room.Versatile for storing everyday essentials, it also reflects light and creates a sense of openness.
"No matter the shape, make sure it's proportioned so you have a good view," adds Elshaug."Hang a full-length mirror behind the bathroom door as well."
In windowless rooms, skylights can prove transformative, absorbing natural light that is both bright and flattering."Look for models that include panels that open up the airflow," advises Elshaug.
Choose a thin line style that can be placed discreetly and scaled within limited ceiling space.Install an exhaust fan nearby to prevent steam and mold.
"For maximum effect, place it above or near the shower," she says."Make sure it's connected separately from the light so you can turn it off when you don't need it."
